This field is characterized\nby a constant need for creative freshness\nin visual communication techniques brought\non by the proliferation of consumer products\nand services, cyclical changes in fashion and\nstyle, and the worldwide growth of communication\ntechnology. Students of Graphic Design\nare confronted with the need to develop heightened\nsensitivity to color, design, graphic production\ntechniques, and a broad vocabulary\nof imagery.\nThe program in Graphic Design balances the\ncomplementary facets of creative discipline\nand contemporary perceptions with studies in\nnecessary techniques such as computer graphics,\ntypography, lettering, layout, principles\nof advertising and marketing, package design,\nphotographic applications, and graphic production.\nThey are then applied to such arenas as\ntelevision, corporate identity, media advertising,\npromotional pamphlets, brochures and packaging,\ntechnical illustration, and sign graphics. Students\nwho complete the Graphic Design program may\nfree-lance their skills, or be employed on a salaried\nbasis in corporate or other business sectors.\nIndependent design studios, advertising agencies,\npublishing houses, government agencies, and\nindustrial corporations are examples of those that\nseek the services of free-lance and staff graphic\ndesigners. Their design services vary from inhouse\nprojects to public need, and run the visual\ngamut from graphic budget presentations (e.g.,\ngraphs, charts, illustration) to concepts in traffic\nmanagement or packaging of industrial products. In\naddition, knowledge of graphic production processes\nmay lead interested Paier graduates into\nareas of sales and management, or may make them\nattractive candidates for various design training\nprograms offered by large printing firms or film\nstudios. Their beginning roles will depend upon the\nsize of the organization that they join, or the nature\nof their free-lance work.
