The Cardiovascular Technology program offers a two-track option for students to complete an Associate in Science degree in Cardiovascular Technology. Students can either choose to enroll into our invasive cardiovascular technology track, which focuses on procedures done in a semi-surgical environment, imaging and treating disease by working on the inside of a patient's body, or they can choose to enroll in our noninvasive track, which focuses on diagnosing and imaging disease while scanning the heart from the outside of the body using ultrasound.\r\n\r\nThe Invasive Cardiovascular Technology track prepares individuals to perform invasive cardiovascular and peripheral vascular examinations in the setting of a cardiac catheterization department in hospitals or outpatient facilities. Working closely with and assisting physicians, the cardiovascular invasive technologist plays an integral role in the diagnosis and interventional treatment of diseases found in the cardiovascular system. This track will prepare students to successfully obtain registration through Cardiovascular Credentialing International as a RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist). Once registration is obtained there are a number of clinical opportunities within the field of cardiovascular health that may be open to the technologist. This program's instruction includes, but is not limited to, reviewing and recording patient histories and clinical data, patient care, investigative and examination procedures, diagnostic procedures, data analysis and documentation, physician consultation, a wide range of equipment operation and monitoring (X-ray imaging as well as invasive equipment), scenario and procedural simulations, case presentation, real-time clinical practice and professional and ethical standards. This program will prepare students to safely perform procedures that utilize radiation and aseptic or sterile techniques required for invasive procedures.\r\n\r\nThe Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technology track will prepare individuals to perform ultrasound imaging of the heart and some other vasculature within the cardiovascular and peripheral vascular systems. This field is termed Echocardiography. Working closely with physicians, the cardiovascular technologist plays an integral role in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases found in the cardiovascular and peripheral vasculature systems. This program will prepare students to successfully obtain registration through Cardiovascular Credentialing International as an RCS (Registered Cardiovascular Sonographer).
