Contact Department Chair Monica Thur-\nston at thurstmm@elac.edu for application.\nThe Commission on Accreditation for Health Informat-\nics and Information Management (CAHIIM) education\naccredit the Health Information Technology Program at\nEast Los Angeles College. The program provides instruc-\ntion and Professional Practice Education (PPE) to assist stu-\ndents in developing the technical skills necessary to main-\ntain components of Health Information Systems consistent\nwith the medical, ethical, legal, and administrative require-\nments of all accreditation and regulatory agencies.\nUpon completion of the Health Information Technology\nProgram, one receives an Associate in Science degree and\neligibility to write the Certification Examination given by the\nAmerican Health Information Management Association.\nThose who pass the Certification Examination are known\nas Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT). This\nprogram may be completed entirely as a day student, an\nevening student, on a part-time basis, or full-time.\nTraditionally, Registered Health Information Techni-\ncians have primarily been employed in the health infor-\nmation management departments (formerly medical\nrecord departments) of hospitals. With the rapid expan-\nsion of healthcare needs, opportunities for employment\nare increasing in managed care, ambulatory healthcare\nfacilities and a number of other areas. Registered Health\nInformation Technicians work with all types of health infor-\nmation systems, computerized data and information,\nincluding electronic medical records. RHITs are found in\nany organization that uses patient data.\nTRANSFER STUDENTS: If any prerequisite courses or core\ncourses have been taken at another U.S. regionally\naccredited college/university, transcripts should be sent to\nboth the ELAC Office of Admissions and the Health Informa-\ntion Technology Program office located within the Allied\nHealth Department. Students should initiate a General\nPetition in the Admissions Office requesting that credit\nbe granted for those courses for which the student feels\nthey are eligible. Supporting documentation should be\nattached to the General Petition to support the student's\nrequest.\nPrerequisite courses or core HTHTEK courses taken at\nanother LACCD campus are not automatically accepted\nand will also need to be submitted by General Petition with\na copy of the LACCD transcript for review by the depart-\nment chair.
