At USI you'll find an engaging program for elementary education majors that places candidates in schools early in the program. Meaningful course work provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills that effective teachers use in their classroom. You'll be exposed to diverse schools and classrooms throughout the elementary program, preparing you for a position in any school in any school district. Early in the program you will tutor, teach K-6 students in small groups, assist the teacher in the classroom, and often teach whole class lessons. As a teacher candidate, you'll be given options to student teach and often work in the classroom the semester before student teaching. USI classes in teacher education are small and project-based. You'll find learning experiences are often collaborative and real world-based.\n\nGraduates of the USI elementary education program report that they feel very qualified for elementary teaching positions. Elementary teachers work in an energizing environment in either a private or public school setting and generally work the same hours as students are present. Most elementary teachers do not work during the summer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be 1.9 million job openings for teachers in the future. After teaching for several years, graduates come back to attend graduate school where they can get an advanced degree in pedagogy or pursue the necessary courses for becoming a Principal or Superintendent.
