The ELAC RT Program dates back to the\n1970's and is one of the largest respiratory therapy pro-\ngrams in Southern California. The program provides stu-\ndents with greater access to hospital clinical sites, fac-\nulty, classroom and laboratory resources to better prepare\nthem for clinical practice and employment. Unless trans-\nferred in from an outside school, (prerequisite, general\neducation (GE), and program prerequisites) all \"First Year\"\nRespiratory Therapy courses (theory and laboratory) are\ntaken on campus at ELAC. At the beginning of the summer\nbetween the 1st and 2nd years of the program (considered\nthe start of the \"clinical phase\"), the majority of the labo-\nratory classes are taken at one of the LACCD-contracted\nclinical affiliate hospitals. After the end of the fall semester\nof the clinical year, students must petition the ELAC cam-\npus for the Associate Degree.\nIn addition to the college WASC accreditation, the ELAC\nRT Program is nationally accredited by the Committee on\nAccreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). The Registry\n(RRT) licensure examinations are administered through\nthe National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
