The PT performs the initial evaluation of the patient and must also, by law, determine when to discharge the patient. Under the direction of physical therapists, PTAs help rehabilitate patients, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform. Medical problems may range from strokes and sports injuries to cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries. The goal is to use treatment techniques aimed at promoting increased movement, reducing pain, restoring function, and preventing disability. Treatments may include therapeutic exercise, functional retraining and applications of heat, cold, light, sound, water and electrotherapy. Physical Therapist Assistants care for patients in a variety of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, nursing homes, pools and patient homes. In all settings, PTAs are teaching and carrying out programs designed to improve the quality of life and to enhance independence. The DMACC Physical Therapist Assistant Program will consist of five semesters over the course of two years. Course content will include human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic exercise techniques, modalities, orthopedics, neurology, and a series of three clinical experiences during the last three semesters of the program. During clinical experiences, students will have an opportunity to work with a variety of patients (e.g., pediatric, geriatric, orthopedic, neurological and cardio-pulmonary patients) to develop his/her competence with a variety of equipment, procedures and personnel. Graduates completing the PTA Program will be prepared to sit for the National Physical Therapist Examination and seek licensure with the IA State Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy."},"ceterms:accreditedBy":["https://credentialengineregistry.org/resources/ce-20b0d337-c2de-43b5-a994-d3f4bfc70b78"],"ceterms:occupationType":[{"@type":"ceterms:CredentialAlignmentObject","ceterms:framework":"https://www.onetcenter.org/taxonomy.html","ceterms:targetNode":"https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/31-2021.00","ceterms:codedNotation":"31-2021.00","ceterms:frameworkName":{"en-US":"Standard Occupational Classification"},"ceterms:targetNodeName":{"en-US":"Physical Therapist Assistants"},"ceterms:targetNodeDescription":{"en-US":"Assist physical therapists in providing physical therapy treatments and procedures.
