This degree may enhance enrollment\nand transfer opportunities at California State Universities.\nThe major provides students with a comprehensive study of\ncomposition, literary theory, and rhetorical strategies. Stu-\ndents become familiar with major themes, works, authors,\nand movements in literature, particularly British and Amer-\nican literature. Students are trained in composition and\ngiven a solid background in critical theory to explore lit-\nerature as an intellectual discipline and art. The required\ncourses help students hone critical thinking, research, rhet-\noric, and writing skills and prepare them for upper division\ncoursework in English or a related field in which strong writ-\ning and critical thinking skills are valued, such as educa-\ntion, law, or business. Students must complete a minimum\nof 60 required semester units of CSU transferable course\nwork with a minimum GPA of 2.0, including a minimum of\n18 semester units in the major with a grade of \"C\" (or \"P\") for\neach course in the major.
