The background knowledge that students bring into the classroom influences how they understand the material you share and the lessons or learning opportunities you provide. Unless you check for understanding, it is difficult to know exactly what students are getting out of the lesson. In fact, checking for understanding is part of a formative assessment system in which teachers identify learning goals, provide students feedback, and then plan instruction based on students' errors and misconceptions.\" (Fisher \u0026 Frey, 2014) \n\nSuggested preparation and implementation strategies for performing checks for understanding\n\nReview the lesson ahead of time and identify places where students may get stuck.\nDetermine places in the lesson where you will check for understanding.\nDuring the lesson, invite students to indicate an answer that reflects whether or not they understand key content.\n\nExample Strategies\n\nWhiteboards: Invite students to write answers on whiteboards or index cards and display them when prompted. Invite a student with a correct answer to explain his or her thinking.\nFour Corners: Designate each corner of the room as an answer. Invite students to walk to the appropriate corner to indicate their answers. Invite the groups to explain how they came to their answers.\nThink, Pair, Share: Teach students the protocol for Think, Pair, Share exercises. Listen to students' answers as they share with their partners.\nDigital Poll: If the tools are available, poll students through digital programs (i.e., Poll Everywhere, Kahoot, or Socrative). Invite students to defend their answers and explain their thinking.\nRound the Room: Invite each student to give a one- to five-word answer to a prompt.\nQuick write: Invite students to write a short paragraph on a given prompt.\nConference: Check in with students individually throughout the lesson to understand their thinking.\nGive one, get one: Invite students to write a response to a prompt and then meet with another student and share ideas; the goal is for each student to leave with something to add to their list of ideas.\n\nIf the check for understanding indicates reteaching the content is necessary, use further checks for understanding to inform how teaching can be modified or differentiated to improve understanding and retention of information."},"ceterms:subjectWebpage":"https://digitalpromise.box.com/s/kvyjkdt0x7puzqvu9ag3hfl73h72cked"}],"ceterms:offeredBy":["https://credentialengineregistry.org/resources/ce-34e96e45-7ba7-4870-b3cf-055d9621d354"],"ceterms:inLanguage":["en"],"ceterms:description":{"en-US":"Educator checks for understanding throughout lessons to ensure students have mastered discrete concepts that build up to the larger objective."},"ceterms:credentialId":"https://microcredentials.digitalpromise.org/explore/check-for-understanding","ceterms:subjectWebpage":"https://microcredentials.digitalpromise.org/explore/check-for-understanding","ceterms:copyrightHolder":["https://credentialengineregistry.org/resources/ce-34e96e45-7ba7-4870-b3cf-055d9621d354"],"ceterms:availableOnlineAt":["https://microcredentials.digitalpromise.org/explore/check-for-understanding"],"ceterms:availabilityListing":["https://microcredentials.digitalpromise.org/explore/check-for-understanding"],"ceterms:credentialStatusType":{"@type":"ceterms:CredentialAlignmentObject","ceterms:framework":"https://credreg.net/ctdl/terms/CredentialStatus","ceterms:targetNode":"credentialStat:Active","ceterms:frameworkName":{"en-US":"Credential Status"},"ceterms:targetNodeName":{"en-US":"Active"},"ceterms:targetNodeDescription":{"en-US":"Awards of the credential are ongoing."}},"ceterms:usesVerificationService":["https://credentialengineregistry.org/resources/ce-1472586c-b08c-4f22-9013-5b4d9a58d277"]}
