Duties vary depending on the practice and scope of practice in the state. Clinical duties can include collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, sterilizing medical equipment, doing blood draws, taking electrocardiograms, and preparing patients for x-rays. Administrative functions include patient scheduling, patient registration, performing billing services, and purchasing and maintaining supplies. Medical Assistants, if directed by a physician and state law, might instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications, authorize drug refills, and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy. Students in the Associate of Applied Science degree complete additional course work in basic radiography and office functions. The Medical Assistant program prepares graduates to take national credentialing exams offered by the American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). The goal of the Medical Assistant program is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains."},"ceterms:accreditedBy":["https://credentialengineregistry.org/resources/ce-20b0d337-c2de-43b5-a994-d3f4bfc70b78"],"ceterms:occupationType":[{"@type":"ceterms:CredentialAlignmentObject","ceterms:framework":"https://www.onetcenter.org/taxonomy.html","ceterms:targetNode":"https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/31-9092.00","ceterms:codedNotation":"31-9092.00","ceterms:frameworkName":{"en-US":"Standard Occupational Classification"},"ceterms:targetNodeName":{"en-US":"Medical Assistants"},"ceterms:targetNodeDescription":{"en-US":"Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician.
