A major in German provides you with advanced language proficiency and cultural skills for professional and academic careers. You can gain work experiences through internships in German-speaking countries and in the U.S. German courses at USI are taught by highly qualified Ph.D. faculty. In addition, you can practice your oral skills in the Miller Language Laboratory, staffed by 26 native/near-native language tutors. USI offers international language events, guest speakers, language clubs and honor societies. USI German students have received DAAD scholarships (equivalent to U.S. Fulbright Scholarships) to study in Germany and internships at OSK Communication in New York City. A German/Journalism major wrote articles for a German newspaper. USI German students have translated for the Evansville mayor's office and Historic New Harmony.\n\nBy learning German, you'll have the option to travel to a German-speaking countries and really get to know the culture. By adding a language to your resume, you may be more competitive when searching for a new position, especially if that organization has a connection to the language. In business, Germany is the world's second-largest exporter and its economy ranks number one in Europe and number four worldwide. Germany is home to numerous international corporations and its investment in the United States is over ten billion dollars. There are also 151 German companies in just Indiana. Some USI alumni have pursued Ph.D. degrees in international diplomacy, politics, relations and linguistics.
