In 2008 the National Academy of Engineering announced 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering. Of these 14 Grand Challenges, 6 are very much related to global environmental issues. The United States Department of Labor predicts 5% growth in environmental engineering jobs between 2018 and 2028. This growth is similar to other occupations (source).
