A concentrated presentation of general education courses combined with career development and clinical experience accomplishes this multi-disciplinary approach. Among the marketable skills acquired are clinical data collection, ophthalmic fabrication and ophthalmic dispensing. The student begins working with patients during the third semester in clinics staffed by ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians. A student must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or better in each course with an \"OPT\" prefix in order to advance within the program. The successful completion of this program offers the graduate a challenging and rewarding career on an ophthalmic health care team. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Optician Licensure Examination and the Optometric Technician Registration Examination. After one year of work experience with an ophthalmologist, graduates may sit for the Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Certification Examination.
